Self-Empowerment Portrait

Students were introduced to the works of Kehinde Wiley, Amy Sherald, and Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe. These artists use the Postmodern Principle of Representin' and use their platform as artists to empower and raise awareness about the struggles of marginalized communities. The students were given the task of creating a self-portrait that depicts them in a powerful position. To achieve this, they used digital photography to capture themselves in empowering poses that expressed their body language, gestures, eye contact, and personal adornments such as clothing. They used a graphite transfer method to transfer photos onto paper and painted portraits using color theory and symbolic colors to convey empowerment.
